“The young Principal Conductor of the Orchestra della Toscana, Diego Ceretta, by now a favourite with the audience of the Teatro Verdi, where the orchestra is based, presented a particularly stimulating programme, bringing together Beethoven and the composer whom he famously considered second only to himself, pairing Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto with Cherubini’s only symphony, commissioned by the Royal Philharmonic Society of London and performed in spring 1815.”
“Ceretta was very effective in highlighting this individuality, particularly, in the view of the present writer, in the two central movements, the Larghetto cantabile and the Minuet (which, given its vigour, might rather be described as a Beethovenian Scherzo), and in capturing their distinctive character: the somewhat Saturnine quality that makes the cantabile more complex, and, in the Minuet, the vigorous metrical originality and the ingenious central Trio with its character that is popular in nature, but in a more reflective sense than in the equivalent passages of Haydn and Beethoven.”
